Welcome Prospective Students and Families!

The Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science, & Engineering is a new, public, sixth through twelfth grade school that opened in the fall of 2007. A partnership between the New York City Department of Education, the community, and Columbia University, CSS-MSE serves academically talented students who have an interest in a rigorous and demanding program focusing on math, science, and engineering. Beginning with a founding sixth grade class, the school will add one grade per year until it reaches its full enrollment of 650 students. Currently the school is composed of 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, & 10th grades.

6th Grade Applicants

Because we are a neighborhood school committed to selecting a diverse student body, we utilize geography as a factor in our admissions process.

  1. Student lives north of 96th Street in Manhattan.
  2. Student doesn't meet the first criteria, but attends an elementary school north of 96th Street in Manhattan.
  3. Student lives and attends an elementary school below 96th Street in Manhattan.
  4. Student lives in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, or Staten Island and doesn't attend an elementary school north of 96th Street in Manhattan.

7th and 8th Grade Applicants

Because we lose very few students from year to year, and most of our students have been following an accelerated academic program starting in grade 6, we accept only a small number of highly qualified students into our existing 7th and 8th grade classes.

Be sure to indicate that your child is an entering 7th or 8th grade applicant. Once your information is received we will add you to our waiting list. From this list, we will contact the top candidates between June and September 2012 as availability permits.

Because the chances of admission into our 7th or 8th grade are slim, we also encourage you to browse other fine schools that may be able to accommodate your child.

Upper School Applicants

CSS-MSE will have a limited number of 9th grade seats available in 2012, and will screen students on the basis of state ELA and Math Tests, GPA and a sample essay.

UPPER SCHOOL APPLICATION PROCESS

1. Submit your NYCDOE's High School Application.

2.Send CSS the application package by December 3, 2011.

3.Wait for CSS to contact you for possible interview and admissions essay exam.
